The Minimum Wage Worker Strikes Back — Debt Ridden — Medium

This is a really hard one for me. I believe that everyone who works should be paid a living wage, and get health care and child care and paid time off. Period, no exceptions. Big companies can afford to do this. The problem is that smaller chains can’t afford it. They don’t have the margin because they don’t have the scale to negotiate on rent and insurance costs. We need to find a way to make this work. As with many things in America today, a large part of the problem is that we’ll need to cut corporate welfare to the big guys and flow that money to subsidies for workers at smaller chains/stores. But that isn’t an easy thing to do in the face of well-funded lobbyists.

These prison stories aren’t just important because they are awful examples of where we are failing as a society. They are a window into the soul of American politics today. Just plain shameful stuff.
